UNGA - SPECPOL

Agenda: Enhancing peace keeping operation and political stability of South Sudan: tackling hybrid threats and resource conflicts.

Freeze date: 11th July 2016

(double delegation)

ABOUT COMMITTEE

Over the last few years, South Sudan has experienced one of the most complex crises of the modern day. The world’s youngest nation, was born from hope and independence in 2011, then quickly plunged into conflict and instability. Despite signing of a peace agreement in 2015, The Juba massacre on July 11, 2016, marked a turning point as renewed violence and instability continued to devastate the country, plagued by hybrid threats, resource conflicts as well as political instability.

Delegates who will be attending SPECPOL will be tasked to balance innovative yet practical solutions to improving peacekeeping operations to achieve stability in South Sudan. The presence of armed groups, resource conflicts and ethnic violence, have made it difficult for traditional diplomacy to uphold peace.

Therefore, the delegates must be prepared to deal with such conditions and challenges and will have to look for different types of strategies that link immediate humanitarian needs with long-term political solutions. Discussions will centre around the role of international peacekeeping missions, the challenges of resource-based conflicts, and the necessity for the formation of an inclusive governance that addresses the needs of all communities.

Nelson Mandela once said, "It always seems impossible until it's done." SPECPOL remains committed to transforming what seems impossible today into the foundation for lasting peace in South Sudan tomorrow.

Chairpersons' Address

As your chairpersons, it is with immense pleasure that we welcome you to the United Nations General Assembly – Special Political and Decolonization Committee, simulated at the fourteenth edition of La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations. We know that the world’s youngest nation, South Sudan, is once again facing a severe crisis. In recent days, heavy fighting has erupted in Juba, pushing a country which was once founded on the hope of independence towards a period of hopelessness. This urgent situation demands your immediate attention, as both short-term interventions and long-term measures are essential to restoring stability in this East-Central African region and so we call upon you to engage in constructive debate and develop innovative solutions to help resolve the ongoing crisis and we hope that you through dialogue, diplomacy and decisive actions find a way to bring lasting peace to South Sudan.

If you see someone functioning normally on two hours of sleep and a cup of coffee, it is definitely Harshika Jhawar. Is Harshika balancing her coffee consumption? Nope. Her balance sheets? Also, nope. A 12th grade commerce student preparing for CLAT which according to her mostly involves rewatching Suits, because that's “studying” right? Nothing beats a good argument, but for her a dog beats everything. In case she starts drifting away, don’t get worried, she probably came across a dog and is thinking about why she doesn’t have one! Being late is a crime for her and when it comes to meetings– once the clock strikes the hour, she is already on standby. Ever after all this Harshika is very caring, very helpful and, somehow, she never out of patience. She might doze off for hours in class, but when it comes to meetings, she is wide awake. Call it a strategy or call it a “sleep coma”—either way, she knows exactly when it is time to pay attention (and when it is time to take a nap)!

Anaahat—whose name means “limitless” and “unbeaten”—lives up to every syllable. She’s not only a champion on the golf course, jetting off to national tournaments across India, but also a certified vocalist with five years of Trinity exams under her belt. Despite all her friend’s endless attempts to grasp golf, they all have learnt one thing for sure: she wins most of the time and even when she doesn’t, she returns with knowledge and works to strive to her best. Her talents extend to public speaking and school, where her grades excel (okay, maybe not in math—but who’s counting?).  In short, Anaahat is a whirlwind of talent, determination, and humor—always ready to stand up against what’s wrong and voice her opinion.

Until May,
Harshika Jhawar and Anaahat Kaur Bindra,
Chairpersons,
United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee,
La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2025.
