ASEAN

Agenda: The situation in Cambodia: Addressing the issues pertaining to Sovereignty and Stability in Southeast Asia

Freeze Date: December 25th, 1978

(double delegation)

ABOUT COMMITTEE

“The strength of a region lies not just in its unity but in its ability to face the storms of uncertainty.”

As 1978 draws to a close, Southeast Asia stands on the brink of a crisis that threatens to reshape the region’s delicate balance of power. Under Khmer Rouge rule Cambodia has experienced an escalating human rights disaster together with devastating political upheaval. Long-term losses from the losing hundreds of thousands of lives alongside political changes initiated by the administration threaten regional stability. The government of Vietnam has decided to take action against the Khmer Rouge because it recognizes the immediate necessity for order restoration and atrocity prevention. The military operation creates substantial questions about territorial dominion along with UN intervention protocols that express themselves in the regional peace situation.

For ASEAN, this situation serves as a crucial test of its unity and purpose. Established to foster stability, development, and cooperation, it now confronts its most significant challenge: how to respond to a crisis that requires action while potentially jeopardizing the very principles it was founded upon. This committee isn’t just about borders, stability, or sovereignty—it’s about navigating the intricate labyrinth of diplomacy. In this committee, delegates will explore the complex interplay of national interests, humanitarian concerns, and regional stability. They must navigate the intricacies of international law, weigh the consequences of intervention versus inaction, and determine the role ASEAN should play in preserving peace while respecting sovereignty. Delegates can expect heated debates, dynamic resolutions, and a chance to convince everyone that your nation’s thinly veiled self-interest is actually altruism.

This is your chance to navigate the complexities of geopolitics, Cold War theatrics, and ASEAN’s attempt maintain harmony in a region that’s anything but predictable

Chairpersons' Address

Genocide begins with the killing of one man – not for what he has done, but because of who he is.”

– Elie Wiesel

As we convene, Southeast Asia faces a crucial moment. The circumstances in Cambodia present complex challenges which require precise diplomatic action and regional cooperation. ASEAN’s golden rule—sovereignty and non-interference—is being put to the test. Will we stand by and watch history unfold, or will we take the reins and redefine regional diplomacy?

This isn’t just another committee; this is where strategy meets reality. We expect sharp analysis, bold ideas, and a commitment to solutions that don’t just sound good but actually work. How this situation unravels with careful diplomacy, regional cooperation and a commitment to stabilize the region will determine the way forward.
As your chairpersons, we promise you one thing: this will not be boring. We’re here for the diplomacy, and the decisions that will make or break this committee.

About the Chairpersons:

If you see someone always ready for a hug, welcome—you’ve spotted your chairperson, Sanvi Choukhani. She may look like a complete nerd, but don’t be fooled by the book in her hand—one swing of her squash racket, and you’ll regret it. When she’s not coding, she’s passionately debating until she’s right (which, according to her, she always is). With extreme political views and a book collection to be marveled at, you’ll always find her reading—probably while listening to the saddest Taylor Swift songs on repeat. She’s also terrified of horror movies, but trust me, the real nightmare is being on the receiving end of her death stare. Sanvi is an undeniable academic weapon, and if there’s something she wants, she’ll get it. Basically, if Paris Geller had a tech obsession and a squash racket, you’d get Sanvi. She’s here to make sure these three days are filled with insight, energy, and just enough heated debates to keep things interesting.

If you see someone bursting with energy or screaming her lungs out for no reason, know that you’ve spotted your chairperson, Noor Kaur Soni. From running on the field for athletics by day to crushing it on the stage by night, she really is an all-rounder you would never expect. You can expect to find her anywhere except her classroom, but she still somehow balances balance sheets and her million sports with equal finesse. A serial overachiever who somehow manages to be the life of the party and the deadline-meeting genius, she is your go-to person for both committee crises and post-session gossip. Get her maaza or cookies(without egg of course) and watch her suddenly love you from the bottom of her heart. Noor is here to make sure this committee is insightful and just chaotic enough to keep things interesting.

Until May,

Sanvi Choukhani and Noor Kaur Soni,

Chairpersons,

Association of South-East Asian Nations,

La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2025.
