ABOUT COMMITTEE
“The strength of a region lies not just in its unity but in its ability to face the storms of uncertainty.”
As 1978 draws to a close, Southeast Asia stands on the brink of a crisis that threatens to reshape the region’s delicate balance of power. Under Khmer Rouge rule Cambodia has experienced an escalating human rights disaster together with devastating political upheaval. Long-term losses from the losing hundreds of thousands of lives alongside political changes initiated by the administration threaten regional stability. The government of Vietnam has decided to take action against the Khmer Rouge because it recognizes the immediate necessity for order restoration and atrocity prevention. The military operation creates substantial questions about territorial dominion along with UN intervention protocols that express themselves in the regional peace situation.
For ASEAN, this situation serves as a crucial test of its unity and purpose. Established to foster stability, development, and cooperation, it now confronts its most significant challenge: how to respond to a crisis that requires action while potentially jeopardizing the very principles it was founded upon. This committee isn’t just about borders, stability, or sovereignty—it’s about navigating the intricate labyrinth of diplomacy. In this committee, delegates will explore the complex interplay of national interests, humanitarian concerns, and regional stability. They must navigate the intricacies of international law, weigh the consequences of intervention versus inaction, and determine the role ASEAN should play in preserving peace while respecting sovereignty. Delegates can expect heated debates, dynamic resolutions, and a chance to convince everyone that your nation’s thinly veiled self-interest is actually altruism.
This is your chance to navigate the complexities of geopolitics, Cold War theatrics, and ASEAN’s attempt maintain harmony in a region that’s anything but predictable
